I discovered two weeks ago that I was a victim of identity theft when I went to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) in Somerset West to apply for a new ID and passport to prepare for trip to Norway for work in September 2017.
When they scanned my ID at Home Affairs two ID numbers reflected and I was told that there was an ID issued under my name in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth in 2014, and that it hadn't been claimed as the person who was meant to collect the ID had been requested to produce proof that the ID belonged to her. I had never been to the Home Affairs department in Motherwell and certainly had never applied for an ID since 2007.
I was referred to DHA in Cape Town, where I was told to submit proof of birth so that they could forward the document to Pretoria to resolve the matter. I submitted the documentation to DHA as requested and the documents were sent to Pretoria for processing. I then called Pretoria later that week and was told that they had the documents but from their side nothing had been done yet.
I explained to them the urgency of the matter, as the office in Norway needed to organize flights two weeks ago already. I was given a reference number for a follow up and was told that an investigation had to be conducted first before I could apply.
I have submitted proof, coming all the way from Uitenhage hospital that the ID was indeed mine. I was told that that the investigation would take up to six months. This has serious implications regarding my career development and I am just told to wait. I am about to lose a crucial work opportunity. This case was supposed to have been opened in 2014 already but DHA did nothing. Had I not gone to apply for an ID and passport I never would have known this.
